Social Justice Community Organizer – Part-time

ACORN Canada is looking for a motivated individual who is interested in fighting and winning local, and national social justice campaigns in Halifax and Nova Scotia 
 
ACORN Canada is made up of more than 80,000 low- and moderate-income member families, in 21 local chapters of ACORN throughout the country, organized democratically through community organizing. 
 
We are hiring a part-time organizer to work and build campaigns such as: 
-Tenants’ rights, regulation of predatory lending, income assistance and disability rights, and affordable housing. 
 
Duties: Organizers carry out a variety of outreach and organizing activities related to current ACORN campaigns and projects; including door knocking, house meetings, phone banks, grassroots fundraising, mass meetings, and actions! Community Organizers work to recruit new members, help mobilize for community change, develop new grassroots leadership, and conduct campaigns around community issues. Organizers work on local, city-wide, province wide, and national campaigns. 
 
This is a part-time position with a combination of fundraising, outreach, and administrative work. 
The position will be approx 18 hours a week (6 hours/day for 3 days/week). 
 
Requirements: No formal experience is necessary, but exceptional interpersonal communication skills and a commitment to social justice are required. Our members seek staff that can manage projects, listen to the community and take initiative to help build the work of the organization. Training is provided. The ability to work independently is a must.
