ACORN National Housing Day of Action
National Housing Day is on November 22, and ACORN Canada is working alongside the Social Housing & Human Rights Coalition and other incredible housing advocates and tenant organizations across the country. Together, we are sending a clear message to the federal government: prioritize social and non-market housing. At the same time, ACORN will push forward the exciting local and provincial campaigns happening in ACORN cities that get to the core of why the housing crisis exists!
Check out ACORN’s National Housing Platform for the details on all of the 9 demands areas that we won’t stop fighting for. Of course on Nov 22nd – National Housing Day – ACORN will be focussed on these two demands areas:
- Fund Social & Non-Market Housing
- Fund people in Core Housing Need
Here are the details of actions happening across the country. Join us!
Calgary: 11:00AM at the Avenue Living Head Quarters - 1201 Glenmore Trail SW
Calgary ACORN's campaign for Rent Control and Security of Tenure takes a stop at the HQ of Western Canada's fastest growing corporate landlords, Avenue Living. The Avenue Living ACORN Tenant Union was instrumental successfully winning anti-eviction and affordability covenants from Canadian Infrastructure Bank after its mega-deal with Avenue Living to perform Energy Retrofits. Now, Calgary ACORN is fighting to ensure that all members of the Tenant Union are granted month to month leases.
Surrey: 1PM in front of Parkside Apartments, 13352 105A Ave, Surrey, BC, near the corner of 105A Ave and University Dr.
We're calling on the Provincial government to act NOW and protect our homes and communities by introducing anti-demoviction protections Demovictions are destroying OUR communities–displacing hundreds of families and razing tenant communities to the ground. Over 400 affordable apartments are in danger of being bulldozed and replaced by luxury condo towers in the heart of a working-class neighbourhood, it's time for tenants to unite to say enough is enough! Join ACORN in calling on the provincial government to act NOW and protect our homes and communities by enacting province-wide anti-demoviction protections, so that working-class families don't lose their housing when mass redevelopment comes.
Ottawa: 12:00 noon at the Human Rights Monument - 220 Elgin St
Ottawa ACORN will be continuing its campaign for a renoviction bylaw in Canada's Capital! Ottawa ACORN is keeping the positive momentum going for Renoviction Bylaws in Ontario! With new renoviction bylaws in place in Hamilton, and soon to be in Toronto, The City of Ottawa has a clear opportunity to protect tenants.
Toronto: 2:00 pm at the Grenville St and Yonge St (one block north of College)
ACORN will gather at 2:00 PM for a rally to highlight the urgent need for social housing. Doug Ford’s $200 checks may cost Ontarians $3 billion, but that same amount could build over 10,000 housing units affordable to low-income people. ACORN members will call on the government to prioritize funding that genuinely addresses the housing crisis in Ontario.
Hamilton: Leader Speakout from 2:00-3:00 PM outside ACORN office (56 Mulberry St)
Join ACORN Hamilton members for National Housing Day! We will be reviewing our national demands, sharing tenant testimonials and creating videos for social media.
London: 1:00 pm at Killam Building at 960 Cheapside Street.
Ontario ACORN's ongoing campaign to close loopholes that allow landlords to circumvent the rent control laws of the province has been gaining steam. On the National Housing Day, London ACORN tenants are holding an action outside of 960 Cheapside calling on Killam to drop the AGI they have applied for.
New Brunswick
New Brunswick finally has a government committed to establishing a permanent rent control system. This is a rare opportunity to create an informed housing policy using best practices from across the country. Avoiding tenant displacement issues commonly seen with rent controls in Nova Scotia, Manitoba, Quebec, and B.C. will be essential to the success of rent control in our province. Join us for the release of NB ACORN's *Do Rent Control Right* recommendations. We call on our new government to ensure that New Brunswick's largest tenant organization has an equal seat at the table as new rent control laws are developed.
Moncton: 12:00 noon at 85 Beechwood Drive
Fredericton: 12:00 noon at 380 York St. at the Colpitts Development
KW: 3:00 pm at Intersection of Frederick St and King St E
The City of Kitchener is still not considering an anti-renoviction bylaw despite the ongoing housing crisis and ever growing number of renoviction cases surfacing in the city, such as those at 141 and 149 Borden Ave N, where serial renovictor Michael Klein is at it again!
Brampton: 12:00 noon at 99 Kennedy Rd N
To keep the pressure on council and hold our representatives accountable, Waterloo Region ACORN members are holding an outreach event on National Housing Day! We'll be meeting at the intersection of Frederick Street and King Street East at 3PM to petition and flyer the neighborhood and grow our numbers so we have the PEOPLE POWER to keep the fire under council's feet! Join us!
Halifax: Saturday, November 23rd at 11 AM
Halifax ACORN is inviting allies and ACORN members from around the province to join the *Vote for Housing* rally. Together, we’ll call on all parties to ban fixed-term leases, make rent control permanent, and invest in building and acquiring social and non-market housing. In Nova Scotia, sign and share NS ACORN’s Note for Housing online action.
