Anti-Renoviction Bylaw Watch Party! (Toronto)
As you may have seen on the news, Toronto just announced the anti-renoviction bylaw that is going to be brought to Planning and Housing Committee NEXT WEEK. We were lauded as the champions of this through your help! (ICYMI, we were featured on City News, CBC, and Radio Canada; links below).
Here's what the drafted Anti-Renoviction bylaw consists of:
- require the landlord to apply for a renovation license with a $700 fee
- obtain a building permit
- providing temporary accommodation or a rent gap payment if the tenant wants to return to the unit after the renovations are complete
- compensation if the tenant doesn’t want to return
- moving costs to the tenants regardless of their choice to return or not
- putting a Tenant Information Notice informing tenants about their rights and resources they can access
- strict financial penalty to landlords for non-compliance.
We now just need the Planning and Hosing Committee and Toronto City Council to pass it! If the bylaw is passed, it will be the strongest anti-renoviction bylaw in Ontario.
That's why we are inviting you to speak at the next Planning and Housing Committee (NEXT WEEK) where we can let councillors know how much this bylaw will disincentivize landlords to exploit the predatory practice of renovictions. We need to end bad-faith evictions NOW.
If you don't feel like speaking, you can still join us for the Committee Meeting Watch Party!
If you want to speak, send a reply e-mail or sign up here through the City's website.
