ACORN Canada is a multi-issue, mass based union of low income and working class people. ACORN is able to be both a local-based union winning local campaigns in Peel Region, as well as a large-scale organization combining forces to win change at the highest levels of the country.
Since 2004 we have won several important victories including payday lending legislation, raises in the minimum wage, housing rights by-laws across the country, affordable internet program, disability rights and more. Job Summary: Work with ACORN’s Ontario Regional Director to perform the needed tasks to sustain and build ACORN’s organization and campaigns in Brampton and Mississauga.

Main roles of the job:

  • Outreach: Building/expanding neighbourhood groups by being directly in the communities we’re organizing, listening to community residents’ concerns, and connecting what they want to see changed to effective mass-based action.
  • Developing building, neighbourhood and municipal campaigns: This is done with ACORN’s current leadership in Peel and with new leaders from the community that you help develop. Campaign planning includes logistics, leadership development, media relations, communications, outreach and organizing meetings/direct actions.

Current issues Peel ACORN is organizing on:

  • Stopping renovictions and demovictions
  • Extreme heat in apartment buildings
  • Demanding repairs in our members’ buildings and landlord licensing
  • Fighting major rent increases

Hours and Compensation:

  • 25.5 hours per week
  • 3 shifts/week between Mon-Thurs from 12-9pm. Schedule may vary on dates with events. Occasional Saturdays as needed.
  • $18.15/hour starting wage with annual cost of living increases
  • Mileage reimbursement for intra-work travel

Room for growth and advancement within the organization. Full-time opportunities are available depending on office budget and willingness to fundraise.
