Waterloo Region ACORN – Junior Community Organizer

ACORN Canada is a multi-issue, mass based union of low income and working class people. ACORN is able to be both a local-based union winning local campaigns in Waterloo Region, as well as a large-scale organization combining forces to win change at the highest levels of the country.

Recent ACORN victories: City of Kitchener is considering new bylaws to protect affordable housing and stop mass tenant displacement, tenant union at 250 Frederick St stops $200 parking increase by greedy landlord, $10 NSF fees recently announced by the federal government.
Job Summary: Work with ACORN’s Southwestern Ontario Lead Organizer to perform the needed tasks to sustain and build ACORN’s organization in Waterloo Region.

Three main roles of the job:

  • Outreach: Phone calling, door knocking, street canvassing, petitioning, online communications, to bring new people into the organization and then linking them to the existing membership and campaigns.
  • Working with the Waterloo Region ACORN leadership: Check in regularly with our dynamic local leadership to coordinate monthly meetings and events.
  • Maintain and expand tenant unions: Work with renters across Kitchener-Waterloo to grow ACORN tenant unions in their buildings fighting for repairs and eviction defence.

This position is partially funded through Canada Summer Jobs. Applicants must be between the ages of 15-30 and be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada. Youth that are underrepresented in the labour market including Black and racialized youth, indigenous youth and 2SLGBTQI+ are encouraged to apply.

Hours and Compensation:

  • 34 hours per week for 8 weeks
  • Works Mon-Thurs from 12-9pm. Schedule may vary on dates with events. Occasional Saturdays as needed.
  • $17/hour starting wage
  • Mileage/transit reimbursement for intra-work travel

Room for growth and advancement after contract completion. Full-time and part-time opportunities are available depending on office budget and willingness to fundraise.
