Community rallies at planning and housing committee in support of possible renoviction bylaw

Staff released a report last week recommending that council wait for further research before implementing a renoviction bylaw. The Wednesday committee meeting heard from 24 public delegates, including representatives from The Ottawa Mission, the Carleton University Students’ Association, the Alliance to End Homelessness and ACORN about the community and personal impacts of renoviction, as well as its contribution to the city’s homelessness crisis.

Renoviction bylaw would be costly, City of Ottawa feasibility report says

A city staff report has recommended against adopting a renoviction bylaw In Ottawa, arguing that it would be costly and that provincial legislation could soon supercede any bylaw. The 19-page report acknowledges that it was “highly probable” that unlawful evictions were happening under the pretext of renovation and that there was harm caused when tenants were forced to leave their homes.
