Global Day of Action – Beat the Heat!

As extreme heat becomes one of the deadliest consequences of climate change, ACORN Canada and our affiliates around the world are organizing to protect workers, tenants, and communities. On July 15, organizations across world will take part in the Beat the Heat Global Day of Action, demanding safe housing, worker protections, access to cooling and public services, and climate solutions led by the people most affected. From ACORN's tenant campaigns in Canada and France to worker organizing in India, Cameroon, and the United States, communities are proving that collective action can win real protections against rising temperatures.

Below is a list of action details taking place across Canada on July 15th:

1. Metro Vancouver: BC ACORN's " NO MORE TENANT DEATHS - DEMAND ACTION ON EXTREME HEAT" action is demanding AC for ALL, Energy Rebates, Cooling Subsidies and Electrification for Tenants! Action will take place at 12PM at the BC Hydro Headquarters - 333 Seymour St, downtown Vancouver. 
2. Calgary: Calgary ACORN is calling for a Maximum Temperature Bylaw and FREE A/C program included in Fair Entry. Join the action at 11AM at Eau Claire Plaza (101 Barclay Parade SW).
3. Ontario-wide: Ontario ACORN "AC for All" Phone Zap to flood the voicemails of PC MPPs with messages from tenants demanding relief from the heat this summer. 6:30PM on zoom - RSVP for the link: https://tinyurl.com/AC4ALLJuly15 
4. Toronto: Toronto ACORN is going to the office of the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) – the crown corporation responsible for managing Ontario’s power grid. ACORN is demanding IESO create a free air conditioner program or supplement the City of Toronto’s program – we need AC for ALL! Join the action at 12PM! Meet up location is 181 University Ave.
5. Ottawa: ACORN members will be at City Hall watching the final vote on a renoviction bylaw! Join us at city hall at 10AM and then carpool with us to Ottawa Hydro's HQ to deliver a letter for 'AC for All'! Exact time is unknown. Contact the office for more information: [email protected] 
6. Mississauga: Peel ACORN members will be holding an action demanding provincial funding for free AC units for low income and heat vulnerable tenants. Action will take place at 12:30PM at PC MPP Rudy Cuzzetto's office (Parliamentary Assisstant to the Minister of Energy) located at 120 Lakeshore Blvd W. 
7. London: London ACORN is marching straight to the London Hydro headquarters to demand immediate utility relief, cooling subsidies, energy rebates, and an absolute guarantee of AC for ALL! Join the action at 1PM at 111 Horton St E (London Hydro HQ).

9. Kingston: Our friends over at Seniors for Climate Action Now! (SCAN), Kingston are organizing a press conference to mark the city’s Extreme Heat Awareness Day from 11AM-12PM at Kingston City Hall – Stationview Room.
10. New Brunswick-wide: Join ACORN members from across the province for a phone zap to flood the voicemails of MLAs with messages for 'AC for All' and Energy Rebates! Join as at 3PM on zoom (link coming soon) 
11. Fredericton: Join NB ACORN members and allies for a rally calling for 'AC for All' and Energy Rebates! Meet us at 11AM at Wilmot Park Splashpad,15 Saunders St.
12. Moncton: Join Moncton ACORN at Assumption Place (770 Main Street) at 11AM July 15th for ACORN’s International Beat the Heat rally!
13. Halifax: Join Nova Scotia ACORN at 1PM at the  Halifax Commons Splash Pad (5816 Cogswell St). ACORN members are calling for:  Energy Rebates, Cooling Subsidies, Electrification for Tenants, and Affordable Energy NOW!
