ACORN Canada is looking for motivated individuals interested in fighting and winning local, and national social justice campaigns here in Halifax. We are hiring under the Canada Summer Jobs Program. 
 
ACORN Canada is made up of more than 80,000 low- and moderate-income member families, in 21 local chapters of ACORN throughout the country, organized democratically through community organizing. We are Canada’s largest grassroots community organization for low and moderate income families. We have won many important social justice campaigns like Payday Lending Acts in BC and Ontario, Renter’s Rights Campaigns, stopping Disability Assistance clawbacks and more. 
 
Job Description: 
-To community organize. Expand the reach of Nova Scotia ACORN’s economic justice campaigns in low to-moderate income neighbourhoods. 
-The job will include: direct door to door contact, follow ups (second) visits to newly engaged people, phone outreach, helping our membership plan meetings / actions and help develop the campaign strategies that make up ACORN’s ongoing social and economic justice campaigns, fundraising and donor list building 
 
ACORN is a union in the community. Like any union our members pay membership dues so that they can have a sustainable independent organization to fight for their interest. Part of everyone’s job at ACORN, both staff and members, are to work to increase our membership and retain out independence.
 
What We Are Looking For: 
-We organize in the field predominately when working people are at home; must be willing work field hours between 2pm and 9pm and the occasional Saturday. 
-Leaders who are willing to work independently in a grassroots setting.
-Willing to handle challenging and rewarding work to help our membership grow to be strong and active leaders.
-Willing to be part of a team that is building a community organization whose purpose is to win for low and moderate income people across Canada for years to come. 
-Opportunity to participate in direct action and social justice issues decided by our current community leaders while cultivating new leaders who will spearhead our future initiatives.
 
No experience is required. Professional organizing training provided. 
 
Requirements: 
– Must be a post-secondary full time student in 2016 and intend to return as full time student for 2016-2017 
– Between the ages of 15-30 
 
Positions available: 
– 1 Summer Student Placements for 10 weeks, 30 hours a week 
 
Compensation: $13.18/hour, includes intra-work transit reimbursement
