Rally to Stop Rheal’s Renoviction
Posted July 8, 2024
We are thrilled to share the recap of our recent Rally to Stop Rheal’s Renoviction, a disabled senior facing renoviction from his home of 20 years. The rally, held on June 25th, was a powerful display of community solidarity and support, and our presence made a significant impact.
Rheal’s landlord’s decision to evict him to convert his home into an office is unfair and underscores the urgent need to address renovictions in our community. Vanier ACORN members gathered at Rheal’s house for a powerful speak-out led by Rheal himself, followed by the reading of a supportive letter from his health practitioner advocating for Rheal to stay in his current unit.
We continued the rally with a march down to Montreal Rd, where we engaged with passersby, spreading awareness about the importance of supporting Ottawa ACORN’s campaign for a Renoviction Bylaw by handing out flyers and collecting petition signatures. This event would not have been possible without the leadership of Rheal Brady, Evan Bury, and our very own Vanier Chapter Chair, Bader Abu-Zahra.
We extend our thanks to the continued support for Rheal’s housing rights. Our involvement and commitment made a significant impact, and we need to keep advocating and fighting for fair housing policies like a Renoviction Bylaw in our communities.
