OTTAWA ACORN DEADLINE DAY RALLY
Posted April 23, 2025
Today, April 22nd, ACORN took to the streets for our Deadline Day Rally to demand real action on renovictions.
Back in January, the City of Ottawa gave the Province three months to enact protections against renovictions under Bill 97.
When is that deadline? Today.
What has the Province done? Nothing.
So now it’s the City’s turn to act. No more delays—draft the bylaw now.
Shoutout to the ACORN members who led the protest—Debbie Staples and Dave Longchamps. Another huge shoutout to ACORN members facing renovictions by Concorde Properties who shared their experiences and didn’t back down—Roxane Donovan, Farouk Shaharudin, Pluto Estinien, and Fred Farrer.
We rallied outside Concorde Properties—a major renovictor in Ottawa led by CEO Jordan Tannis, who is renovicting long-term tenants in Overbrook and the Golden Triangle under the guise of major renovations. Not only that, Concorde Properties staff have been aggressively harassing tenants, and offering cash for keys to move out early.
When we arrived to deliver our demands, Concorde slammed the door in our faces, refused to speak with us or accept our letter of demands, and called the police. But we did not back down. ACORN members gave testimonies on the sidewalk, and we chanted loud enough for Concorde to hear us through the walls: We’re not scared—and we’re not going anywhere.
While cities like Toronto and Hamilton have already passed bylaws to protect tenants against renovictions, Ottawa still has nothing.
That’s unacceptable—and ACORN is here to make sure the City keeps its word.
The City voted in January 2025 to start drafting a renoviction bylaw if the Province didn’t act.
Well—time’s up. We’ve waited long enough. Draft it now.
