Ottawa South ACORN Protest: Rein in the REITs!

Posted April 17, 2025

Today ACORN Ottawa South members held a protest to demand the federal government crack down on REITs when they don’t do their job!  ACORN members took to the street and told their experiences living in buildings owned by Starlight and Hazelview – both REITs. ACORN members are fed up with the bedbugs, cockroaches, black mold, lack of repairs, maintenance and cleanliness of their buildings and sent a strong message from ACORN’s National Platform:

  • The federal government must stop apartment sales to corporate landlords

  • Stop financialized landlords from buying more affordable housing. Set limits to how much housing they can acquire.

  • Ensure that any public money given to private developers is used to create housing for people who are in core housing need.

ACORN is demanding bold action from all federal parties this election. REITs continue to treat housing as a commodity—resulting in unaffordable rents, neglect, and displacement. ACORN is calling on all parties to commit to reining in these corporate landlords and making housing truly affordable and livable for all. See more on ACORN’s National Platform HERE

Big thank you to ACORN leaders Love Afinotan, Marly Bruce & Dakota Dundas for leading the protest today, as well as a shout out to ACORN members Matt Milne & Andrew Moggridge who were on the megaphones and every member who braved the winds to fight for tenant rights!
