Posted September 12, 2024
Ottawa ACORN fighting back renovictions! Over 330 tenants from 11 different buildings are facing renovictions and ACORN has had enough.
Over 70 ACORN members and tenants from across the city gathered in front of city hall to show city council how important and urgent an anti-renoviction bylaw is to the tenants in this city! 7 ACORN members facing renovictions in different buildings from Brittania, Vanier, Centretown, and more, spoke about how this is impacting them. They shared their anger, their fear, and how none of them were going to stop fighting for their homes. Just in the last 4 months, there have been over 330 tenants from 11 different buildings in Centretown, Sandy Hill, Vanier, Overbrook, and Brittania. ACORN has had enough.
City staff are studying Hamilton’s anti-renoviction bylaw right now and when they come back to the city councillors with their recommendations, ACORN is demanding that this work continues and the next steps taken be a strong one. Ottawa tenants can’t afford to be left behind any longer. NO FEAR, NO DOUBT, WE WON’T MOVE OUT!
Special shoutouts to ACORN members Eddy Roue and Marie-Lourdes Garnier for leading a strong action. More shoutouts to ACORN members who spoke about their current renovictions: Tamirat Gameda, Nelda Giroux, Sally Thompson, Albert Cote, David Longchamps, Debbie Staples, and Paul Burns.
Thank you to our wonderful guest speakers James Hardwick from Community Legal Services, Sam Hersh from HORIZON, and Councillor Ariel Troster for your support!
