Global Action Marks ACORN International’s 55th Anniversary with Stand Against Gautam Adani!
Posted June 19, 2025
On June 18, 2025, ACORN International marked its 55th anniversary by doing what it does best: organizing.
Members around the world held coordinated actions to call out the Adani Group’s mass displacement of residents in Dharavi, Mumbai, and to demand accountability from the institutions enabling it.
Dharavi is one of the largest informal settlements in the world and home to nearly one million people. Adani’s redevelopment plan threatens to evict hundreds of thousands and relocate many to the toxic Deonar landfill, all to make space for luxury malls and towers. ACORN members stood in solidarity with Dharavi residents, calling for an end to forced displacement and the unchecked power of corporations like Adani.
Canadian institutions remain financially entangled with the Adani Group despite mounting allegations of corruption and human rights abuses. Major pension funds including: CDPQ, OMERS, and BCI, have maintained investments in Adani-linked companies, even after a U.S. Department of Justice indictment in 2024 accused the conglomerate of bribery, fraud, and obstruction of justice.
Global asset manager BlackRock, with offices in Toronto, remains one of Adani’s top investors. Crown Corporation Export Development Canada has previously supported Adani projects. ACORN is calling on MPs, Crown corporations, and financial institutions to end complicity in Adani’s mass displacement and environmental harm.

Hamilton, ON
Hamilton ACORN members marched along Main Street to call on MP Aslam Rana to take a stand against Canadian investments tied to the Adani Group. The group rallied outside Rana’s newly assigned constituency office at 630 Main St. East. Members taped demand letters to the door of the locked office, urging MP Rana to condemn Adani’s forced evictions in Mumbai and support divestment.

Surrey, BC
A small but determined group of ACORN members marched from Surrey Central Station to MP Randeep Sarai’s constituency office to demand that Canada divest from the Adani Group. MP Sarai is the Secretary of State for International Development, making him a prime target for the demand for Crown Corporations like Export Development Canada (EDC) to divest from Adani. Members entered the office and delivered a demand letter to staff, calling for action on Adani’s forced evictions in Dharavi and raising concerns about Canadian financial ties to the conglomerate.
Gary Rodden, Co-Chair of ACORN’s New Westminster board, led the delegation. A meeting with Sarai has been scheduled for early July.

Toronto, ON
ACORN members entered Brookfield Place in Toronto’s financial district, demanding BlackRock divest from the Adani Group and its role in mass displacement in Mumbai.
Security attempted to remove the group, but members held their ground until the head of security arrived and accepted their demand letter, pledging to forward it to BlackRock officials. Outside the building, members phoned BlackRock executives directly to reiterate their demands.

Calgary, AB
Calgary ACORN members visited the constituency office of newly elected MP Corey Hogan to demand action on Canadian investments tied to the Adani Group. Though Hogan was in Ottawa and the office is not yet fully operational, staff accepted ACORN’s demand letter and pledged to share it with the MP.
Members emphasized that Calgarians expect their elected officials to oppose public and private investments in Adani-linked projects connected to mass displacement and environmental harm.

Ottawa, ON
Ottawa ACORN joined the first-ever International Day of Action against the Adani Group with a visit to MP Mona Fortier’s office in Vanier. Eleven members delivered a letter demanding Fortier support divestment from Adani companies, which continue to receive Canadian pension fund investments despite allegations of corruption and human rights violations. Fortier’s staff accepted the letter and committed to providing a response.
Members then flyered the neighbourhood to raise awareness about Adani’s forced displacement of up to one million residents from Dharavi to India’s largest landfill in Deonar.

London, ON
ACORN members visited the office of MP Arielle Kayabaga to demand that the federal government cut ties with the Adani Group over its role in the forced displacement of residents in Dharavi, Mumbai. Staff accepted the demand letter and spoke with members about the ongoing human rights concerns tied to Adani’s redevelopment project. Staff confirmed the message would be shared with the MP.
