BC ACORN fights for affordable energy!
Posted May 20, 2026
Today 15 ACORN members and allies held a rally outside of FortisBC’s downtown Vancouver office to demand an end to their Tilbury expansion plans!
Ratepayers are seeing an average increase of $130 annually on their Fortis gas bills —and it’s not because of “market costs.” It’s because the capital costs of a private gas monopoly are being passed on to us like we are their own corporate ATM.
One major project ratepayers already being forced to subsidize is Phase 1 of the Tilbury Gas Facility expansion in Delta. If the BC government greenlights “Phase Two” of this expansion, we’re looking at another $120 annual increase. FortisBC wants to build this massive export terminal to send gas overseas on tankers via the Fraser River.
Why we are fighting:
- No More Subsidies: Working people shouldn’t be the “piggy bank” for a private corporation’s export dreams.
- Stop Phase Two: We cannot afford another $120 hike on top of already record-high inflation.
- Be Fair, Fortis: Energy is a necessity, not a way to squeeze low-to-moderate income families for corporate gain.
ACORN leaders Monica and Gary led the action with support from our allies Stand Earth, Dogwood and Wilderness Committee. A demand letter was delivered asking for a meeting with Roger Dall’Antonia – President and CEO of FortisBC.
