1010 Broadview Avenue ACORN Tenant Union Presents “Golden Cockroach Award” To Their Landlord!

East York ACORN members joined tenants at 1010 Broadview Avenue to unveil the Golden Cockroach Award, presenting it to the landlord and property manager: Lugano View Limited and Arcanos Property Management, respectively. Tenants have faced years of consecutive Above-Guideline Increases on their rent, while the building has faced a fly infestation and multiple property standards and Fire Code violations.
Tenant leader Joe Sherman spoke out against the targeted harassment towards tenants who are organizing with their neighbours and building a tenant union in the building. Member of Provincial Parliament for Toronto—Danforth, Peter Tabuns, was in attendance, and encouraged tenants to keep speaking out against injustice in the building and across the city. A senior property manager from Arcanos was even in attendance, dismissing tenants’ concerns the entire time.
Members first taped their demand letter to the superintendent’s door before handing a copy to the senior property manager. We’re demanding:
- Fire Arcanos and hire a new, responsible property management company to ensure professional and lawful operations.
- Update the work order system to allow for online work orders with confirmation and tracking for tenants.
- Drop the current Above Guideline Rent Increase (AGI) application and suspend any future AGIs until all safety, bylaw, and maintenance concerns are resolved.
Tenants then handed the Golden Cockroach Award to the senior property manager before one of them led him to their apartment to show him firsthand what they’re dealing with. Outside, tenants celebrated their successful action with chocolates, cookies, and delicious date squares, while ACORN leaders let everyone know when and where the next local ACORN chapter meeting is.
