110+ Ontario ACORN Members Meet to Demand FULL Rent Control, LTB Reform, Stop Renovictions AND MORE from the PC Government

On November 20th, over 110 ACORN members from across Ontario met to discuss REAL solutions to the housing crisis – the kind you won’t hear from developers. The meeting was led by incredible ACORN tenant leaders – thank you Cristiano Da Silva (Toronto), Maribel Jagorin (Southwestern Ontario), Tanya Burkart (Peel), Andre Grandpierre (Ottawa), and Ted Plastaras (Hamilton) for leading such an engaging forum.

ACORN members met in advance of an invite-only meeting the Ministry of Housing had announced to “engage municipal partners and other key stakeholders” on how to tackle the housing crisis.

But who are these key stakeholders? With scandal after scandal uncovering the Ford government’s coziness with developers, it’s reasonable to say that the industry has a big seat at the table.

One key stakeholder Ford has forgotten is TENANTS. It was clear during our meeting that tenants have a very different perspective from the corporate developers Doug Ford’s ear – we’re less concerned with building unaffordable housing that turns a profit, and more concerned with stopping renovictions, AGIs and building more housing run by nonprofits, co-ops, land trusts, and social housing providers.

Ontario ACORN members are active, organized and refuse to be ignored. We are demanding:

1. Full Rent Control
2. LTB Reform
3. Stop Slumlords
4. End Tenant Displacement
5. Repeal Ford’s bad housing bills
6. Increase Funding to Non-Market Housing
7. Allow Inclusionary Zoning Policies to be created locally
8. Start a Rental Registry
9. Moratorium on Selling Government Owned Land
10. Climate Resiliency in Buildings
