Accora Village Tenants Take Action to Demand Answers from Ferguslea Properties

On Tuesday, August 11, Accora Village ACORN Tenants Union came out to take action, taking time off work to stand up for their community. We also stood in solidarity with the many tenants who could not make it but continue to deal with these issues every day.
This action was to deliver a letter to Ferguslea Properties to meet with tenants and address the current issues facing the community, including repairs and maintenance, flooding, AGIs and communication. Tenants are also organizing to have a real say in the future of Accora Village and the proposed redevelopment that could displace nearly 1,000 households. We want to make sure there are no demovictions.
Before delivering the letter, Accora Village ACORN Tenant Union leaders Norma-Jean and Valerie spoke to neighbours, fellow tenants and ACORN members about the issues faciAng the community and why we were taking action. Security then told us we had to leave. Our ACORN leaders, who live in the community themselves, pushed back and told security that we live here and have every right to be in our own community. Security then attempted to get the unit numbers of the tenants, which we refused to provide, and threatened to call the police. The same message was echoed by the health and safety officer.
Rather than backing down, tenants continued the action and marched together to the Accora Welcome Centre to deliver our demand letter directly to Ferguslea Properties, with security following behind. Once we arrived, a few tenants from the group tried to deliver the letter but were asked to stay outside while management came out to receive it.
The message from tenants was clear: our concerns matter, our homes matter, and we tenants deserve a voice in the future of Accora Village. This is what tenant organizing looks like: neighbours coming together, identifying the issues in their community, building leadership and taking action together. Through ACORN, tenants have already shown their collective power, including bringing more than 200 tenants to the virtual redevelopment consultation back in June.
We look forward to meeting with Ferguslea Properties to sit down with the tenants who live here and address both the current problems in the community and the future of Accora Village.
