Vanier Renoviction Walking Tour
Posted October 10, 2024
ACORN’s Renoviction Walking Tour was powerful and eye-opening, bringing to light the true impact of renovictions in Vanier. The walking tour covered a distance of 4km, 1200 steps and lasted for 3 hours, featuring visits to 10 buildings in Vanier facing renovictions.
The Renovictions Walking Tour visited:
- 265 Pères-Blancs Ave
- 269 Pères-Blancs Ave
- 158 Deschamps Ave
- 156 Deschamps Ave
- 345 Richelieu Ave
- 345 Richelieu Ave
- 311 Blake Blvd
- 314 Shakespeare St
- 319 Shakespeare St
During the tour, we heard speeches from ACORN members, including Mel Battison, Albert Cote, Sara Laviolette, Debbie Staples, Rheal Brady, and Richard Federick. These ACORN members bravely spoke outside their buildings, sharing firsthand the impact of renovictions on the community and tenants. Councillor Stephanie Plante also joined us in support.
The tour’s grand finale was the stop at the office of landlord Jason Anbara and Anzar Group (a property management and real estate group) involved in multiple building renovictions. Here, tenants stood in solidarity, chanting that their fight is everyone’s fight to remain in the units they call home. They delivered a demand letter to both groups demanding they cease renovictions immediately.
The “ACORN Vanier Renovictions Walking Tour” was a powerful demonstration of strength and unity in the face of renovictions. Thank you to ACORN leaders Mel Battison, Debbie Staples, and Richard Federick for leading such a great action. It was proof that together, the people united will never be defeated.
