Moncton New Brunswick Stop Energy Poverty Rally!
Posted August 26, 2024
Last week, New Brunswick ACORN members held a rally to demand lower energy rates for low- to moderate-income households. With a strong turnout and lots of media coverage, we beat out the rain and got our message out there!
Over 20 members and several organizations showed their solidarity with ACORN as Peter Jongeneelen gave a 9-minute speech about how high rates have increased this past year, how much they are going up still, and what the current Conservative government has done to harm the lives of working class people across the province, including removing a subsidizing program back in 2022.
Energy costs are a key issue across the province, with many households (upwards of 40% in some areas) spending more than 6% of their income on energy, being the definition of energy poverty. In this upcoming election, we are committed to ensuring people’s voices are heard and this price gouging through energy be tackled!
