Housing Justice Program 2022
Posted February 3, 2022
For the past ten years, the University of Ottawa Law School’s Housing Justice Program has partnered with ACORN to provide pro bono legal assistance to tenants experiencing maintenance and other housing issues. The program will run from February 15th until March 31st, 2022.
ACORN’s primary focus is organizing tenants to fight for change. While the Housing Justice Program provides support for tenants to access their legal rights, in our experience the law is often written in favour of landlords. This is why the program offers a dual approach towards resolving tenant issues like pests, lack of repairs, evictions or unfair rent increases. ACORN can help you organize with other tenants through building actions, petitions, and getting the media involved to apply pressure on the landlord, while also connecting you with a team of law students to build your case.
Tenants who qualify for assistance will be paired with a law student team who will provide free legal assistance under the supervision of experienced legal counsel. The law students will also prepare applications to the Landlord and Tenant Board for tenants whose claims are assessed as being legally valid. The Housing Justice Program is unfortunately unable to offer representation before the Board, though students may be able to assist tenants prepare for their hearing.
