On Thursday Nov 19 2015, 50 members and allies of Ottawa ACORN rallied in front of Timbercreek Asset Management Properties to protest winter evictions of 80 units scheduled for Feb 29 2016. Members are deeply concerned not only about how landlords are allowed to do this, but also that the management has claims they will demolish the property and rebuild 300-400 units and they have yet to file a permit with the city. Members feel this is part of our larger problem in our city where large landlords and developers can act in this manor without being accountable to the city or the community. Members want a delay in the evictions as some families have not found homes but also a stake in whatever comes to pass in Herongate. The property was originally built by Minto, and run into the ground by 5 landlords over the past 8 years and members have battled every single one.

Moving forward, we want to see the city ban winter evictions so this doesn’t happen again, require that owners disclose their intentions to the city and make it mandatory to file permits before evicting families for property input and community consent and that new and large constructed rental developments include a density of affordable housing. This battle is not over. Please read the series of letters to the mangement our members have published and their last response the evening prior to our rally last week.
