Tenants Flood Doug Ford’s Phone Lines to Stop Bill 60

Posted November 13, 2025

More than 125 renters across Ontario joined ACORN’s province-wide Phone Zap to Stop Bill 60 — jamming the phone lines of Premier Doug Ford, Housing Minister Rob Flack, and Attorney General Doug Downey to send one clear message: vote NO on Bill 60!

Doug Ford’s new housing plan, Bill 60: the “Fighting Delays, Building Faster Act,” was written by Ontario’s biggest landlord lobbyists with zero input from tenants. Announced on October 23rd, Bill 60 would:

  • Fast-track evictions by cutting tenant notice periods in half and hiring more “enforcement officers” to remove people from their homes faster.
  • Block tenants from defending themselves — making it harder to raise issues like disrepair, harassment, or repeated AGIs during eviction hearings.
  • Cut tenant appeal times from 30 days to 15.
  • Eliminate compensation for tenants evicted for a landlord’s “own use” if given 4 months notice.
  • And more!

All of this adds up more people losing their homes, and a system tilted even further in favour of landlords.

With Ford’s government bypassing public committee hearings — silencing tenants entirely while landlords get full access — ACORN members picked up their phones to give MPPs a piece of their minds!

During today’s Phone Zap, hundreds of renters joined a live Zoom to flood MPP offices with calls demanding Ford withdraw Bill 60 and protect rent control forever.

Some members got through to staff directly — others left voicemails outlining our collective demands.

ACORN is calling on the Ford government to:

  • Withdraw Bill 60’s harmful measures that speed up evictions and reduce tenants’ rights
  • Commit to never bringing in fixed-term leases
  • Close rent control loopholes by ending the exemption for post-2018 buildings and banning Above Guideline Increases (AGIs)
  • Bring in vacancy control so rent stays affordable between tenants
  • Restore in-person LTB hearings and cut tenant wait times

Bill 60 could go to a final vote as early as November 18th — so the next few days are critical. ACORN members are mobilizing other renters to keep up the pressure with canvasses in Toronto, Hamilton, Ottawa, Mississauga, St. Thomas, and Cambridge this Friday and Saturday.
