Students Fight Back – Christmas Card Delivery for Rent Control in Alberta!

Posted December 22, 2023

On December 21, 2023 ACORN delivered 40+ Christmas cards to the UCP Minister of Advanced Education, Rajan Sawhney from university students and staff struggling with high rents and rent increases.

Students like Cam, who writes:

“Merry Christmas,

My name is Cam. I’m a student at the U of C studying sociology & International Indigenous studies. During my time in school my rent has increased by over $500/mo and is going to rise another $100/mo. This has absolutely made it more difficult to accomplish my degree! For Xmas this year please support Bill 205 for a rent cap.

Xoxo Cam”

NW ACORN tenant organizer Keegan Colwell led the action and read each of the christmas cards out loud as he handed them to the Minister’s office staff. ACORN is urging the Minister of Advanced Education to support Bill 205 for a temporary rent cap that was put forward as a private members bill by Alberta NDP opposition housing critic, Janis Irwin.
