Save Our City, Stop Renovictions Rally Demands Immediate Action
Posted January 15, 2025
On January 14th, ACORN protested outside Ottawa’s City Hall to demand stronger protections for tenants facing renovictions. The protest aimed to pressure city councillors the day before a key vote on January 15 for an anti-renoviction bylaw in Ottawa.
ACORN members chanted “Stop Renovictions!” and “People over Profits!” while highlighting the growing issue of renovictions in Ottawa. Renovictions have increased by 545% from 2017 to 2022, with over 330 tenants reaching out to ACORN for help with renovictions since June 2024. As of today, Ottawa is the only major city in Ontario without tenant protections against displacement.
We listened to ACORN members directly impacted by renovictions, who shared the impacts of eviction and the rising rents being completely out of reach. After that we had a phone blitz, calling city councillors to urge them to vote in favor of the bylaw tomorrow at committee. Then we heard from guest speakers who shared their support for ACORN’s campaign for an anti-renoviction bylaw.
Huge shoutout to the ACORN leaders who ran the rally! Thank you to Sara Laviolette, the Chair of ACORN’s Vanier Chapter, and Dave Longchamps, the Co-Chair of ACORN’s West-end Chapter!
Thank you to Councillor Troster, PSAC-NCR, 613-819 Black Hub, HORIZON Ottawa, and Councillor Plante for standing with us in the fight for an anti-renoviction bylaw in Ottawa. 🙌
The fight continues, and ACORN’s message is clear: protect renters, not profits.
Stay tuned for news coverage from CTV and Radio-Canada AND the results of the vote tomorrow!!
