We are deeply saddened by the loss of long time Burnaby ACORN leader Monica McGovern.
Monica joined ACORN during the original Burnaby ACORN organizing drive in 2012. During the drive, the fledgling group depended on her calm and reasoned leadership for guidance as they embarked on a mission to build power for low to moderate income people. They promptly elected her Chair of Burnaby ACORN at the end of the drive.
Over almost the last decade Monica has been fixture at ACORN meetings, actions, on the national board, and at conventions, as well as a prominent spokesperson for the organization.
During her time there was not a campaign that BC ACORN ran that Monica was not central to. From the first local campaign to get Burnaby City Hall to clampdown on payday lenders, through the famous Stop Demoviction campaigns in Metrotown, Monica’s presence was always felt.
Moving forward BC ACORN is committed to hold her legacy high as we fight for better housing conditions for all BC tenants. Always a champion of strong standards of maintenance coupled with landlord licensing, we are committed to make Monica proud as we win those campaigns in Burnaby and province wide.
A service will be held on September 17th at 11:15am – click here for the livestream. For information and/or to send flowers to the family or plant a tree in memory of Monica McGovern please visit their Tribute page.
