Queen’s Park on Notice Rallies Demand Rent Freeze & Raise the Rates!

Posted October 23, 2025

Today, nearly 100 ACORN members joined our allies in putting Queens Park on Notice! ACORN members rallied at Queen’s Park (Toronto), the Housing Minister’s office (St-Thomas) and the regional office of the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services (Ottawa). Together, our message to MPPs returning to the legislature this week was loud and clear:

  • Rent Freeze NOW!
  • FULL Rent Control for ALL Buildings!
  • End Vacancy Decontrol and Ban AGIs!
  • DOUBLE the Rates of ODSP & OW!

Rent is out of control because the Ontario government is letting corporate landlords call the shots. If rents are sky-high and ODSP is stuck in the gutter, people end up homeless — plain and simple. The government can fix it, if only they’d listen to those most impacted by the housing crisis and poverty (our members!).

Instead, organizers got word that at the same time as our Queen’s Park rally, the Ford government would be announcing a set of proposed changes to the Landlord and Tenant Board (LTB) that would effectively END rent control and fast-track evictions.

ACORN & York South Weston Tenant Union led a march taking over the street from Queen’s Park to the site of this announcement inside Whitney Block. We made sure the first thing the Province heard after announcing their disastrous proposals wasn’t applause — it was the sound of our chanting: “Fight! Fight! Fight! Housing is a Right!” There will be a big fight ahead – but we’re ready for it.
