Ottawa South ACORN’s First Organizing Committee Meeting Makes for a Powerful Start
Posted June 16, 2025
Last night marked a major milestone: the first Ottawa South ACORN Re-Organizing Committee meeting—and what a turnout! We had 14 engaged members from across the South-End, ready to share, strategize, and take action.
The meeting was led by three strong leaders who did a fantastic job facilitating and keeping the energy high. A standout moment was the brainstorming session, where every single member shared their experiences and concerns. The issues raised highlighted just how urgent and necessary organizing is in our communities:
-
A/C Fees – Some members are being charged $180 for the first A/C unit and $100 for each additional unit. Completely unacceptable during heatwaves!
-
Visitor Parking & QR Codes – Technology shouldn’t be a barrier to parking. Multiple members have received tickets over $100 simply for not knowing how to register a vehicle via QR code.
-
Housing Conditions – Toxic mold, pests, and chronic maintenance issues like recurring drain problems that get temporary “fixes” instead of professional repairs.
-
Tenant Rights Violations – Improper notice of entry and long-time tenants being ignored when requesting real upgrades—being handed a can of paint is not a solution!
-
Above Guideline Increases (AGIs)
-
General neglect – such as potholes and unsafe walkways.
These stories are calls to action. Members voted unanimously to move forward with organizing the South-End, and the excitement around a re-organizing drive was clear.
Big shoutout to the leaders who ran the meeting: Habib Hajjar, Cassandra LePage and Alexis Bousfield.
Looking Ahead
While we’re thrilled with the turnout and participation, we’re aiming even higher for our next meeting. More voices, more buildings, and more momentum. This is just the beginning!
