Organizing for Change: ACORN’s Workshop on Speaking at City Hall

Last week, ACORN members came out to an important workshop, “How to Present at City Hall,” to get prepared for a crucial vote on the anti-renoviction bylaw in Ottawa.

ACORN leaders Eddy Roue and Sharon Katz led the really successful workshop. The workshop emphasized the critical need for tenants’ voices to overpower the influence of landlords and lobbyists. We went over ACORN’s demands for an anti-renoviction bylaw aimed at the city, how city hall works, and then got into the meat and potatoes of the workshop!

ACORN members had really engaging discussions about common rebuttals we might encounter at the committee meeting from city councillors and how to respond to them. Then we went over the structure of a presentation and the power of sharing personal stories with city councillors as to why we need an anti-renoviction bylaw in Ottawa.

After we learned how to do it, members got into groups to start writing their presentation on why we need the city to pass an anti-renoviction bylaw. Quite a few members volunteered to share their presentation with the group to get the nerves out and in the end, members left ready to demand change.

With the next vote approaching, ACORN is standing strong, ready to make an impact at city hall in the fight for an anti-renoviction bylaw that tenants urgently need.

Sign the online action and send an email to city council telling them to pass an anti-renoviction bylaw: https://acorncanada.org/take_action/stop-renovictions-in-ottawa-2/
