Newton ACORN Launching Petition Drive to Make School Streets Safe for Kids!

Posted January 24, 2025

Newton ACORN is taking action to make our streets safer for kids walking to school. Today Newton ACORN launched a petition calling on the City of Surrey to address the growing danger at the intersection of 70B Ave and 134 St.

This intersection has the only crosswalk connecting 120+ low-income families at BC Housing Complex Greenbrook to neighboring elementary schools and Unwin Park. Many of our members have had close calls with cars speeding up to get through the intersection instead of stopping for pedestrian traffic, putting kids in serious danger.

Lacking a crossing guard, ACORN members took matters into their own hands, acting as our own crossing guard for the community. We forced drivers to stop for kids and parents walking home from school, and collected signatures from passersby calling for action from City Hall.
