NB’s Affordable and Clean Energy Forum was a Success!

NB ACORN hosted a wonderful Affordable and Clean Energy Forum, with two special guests!
Members and allies alike were joined by Shelley Petit, Chair of the New Brunswick Coalition of Persons with Disabilities, and Green MLA Megan Mitton. They spoke about key issues affecting low-income people in the province, answered questions and encouraged people to get involved in fighting back.
Despite the ongoing energy poverty crisis, NB Power and the provincial government are announcing more rate hikes while pushing an american billion-dollar gas plant in Tantramar and backing energy-hungry projects like a proposed AI data centre near Saint John. These costly decisions will be paid for by the public, not by the corporations that benefit the most.
At the forum, ACORN laid out clear demands: rebates on energy bills, real arrears management to stop disconnections, a permanent winter disconnection ban, affordable and accessible cooling in the summer, and a pause on dirty, expensive projects until real, affordable alternatives are fully explored. Enough is enough. Join us to build power for an energy system that is truly affordable and clean in New Brunswick!

ACORN NB a organisé un forum formidable sur l’énergie abordable et propre, avec deux invitées spéciales !
Les membres et leurs alliés ont été rejoints par Shelley Petit, présidente de la Coalition des personnes handicapées du Nouveau-Brunswick, et Megan Mitton, députée provinciale du Parti vert. Elles ont abordé les problématiques clés qui touchent les personnes à faible revenu dans la province, répondu aux questions et encouragé les participants à s’impliquer dans la lutte contre ces injustices.
Malgré la crise énergétique actuelle, Énergie NB et le gouvernement provincial annoncent de nouvelles hausses tarifaires tout en promouvant un projet américain d’usine à gaz d’un milliard de dollars à Tantramar. Et ils soutiennent des projets énergivores comme un centre de données d’IA près de Saint John. Ces décisions coûteuses seront payées par le public, et non par les entreprises qui en profitent le plus.
Lors du forum, ACORN a présenté des demandes claires : des remises sur les factures d’énergie, un véritable système de gestion des retards de paiement pour mettre fin aux coupures, une interdiction permanente des déconnexions en hiver, un système de climatisation abordable et accessible en été, et une suspension des projets polluants et coûteux jusqu’à ce que des solutions viables et abordables aient été pleinement explorées. Les membres ont fait entendre leur voix, ont appelé leur député provincial et le ministre de l’Énergie, puis ont signé et partagé les actions en ligne d’ACORN NB.
