March Momentum: Ottawa ACORN Gears Up to Launch Safe Apartments Bylaw Campaign

Posted March 31, 2026

March was a powerful month for ACORN Ottawa.

Across both the South and West chapters, members came together for organizing committee meetings focused on one goal: winning a Safe Apartments Bylaw in Ottawa.

Members dug into how we bring more people into the fight, especially folks who are dealing with repairs, pests, and unsafe conditions every day.

Together, we brainstormed creative ways to make our upcoming big citywide meeting engaging, welcoming, and action-driven so new people feel ready to jump in and take action.

Both chapters also planned outreachs to hit our turnout goals because we know winning change means showing up in numbers.

That energy carried into our citywide leaders meeting, where tenant leaders from across Ottawa stepped up to shape the next phase of the campaign.

The focus:

  • What will make the big meeting powerful
  • How we show the city that tenants are organized
  • And how we build momentum into a major citywide action

Leaders mapped out how we take this fight directly to City Council making it clear that tenants won’t settle for neglect any longer. We’re organizing to win real enforcement and real protections.

A huge thank you to all the leaders who showed up and pushed this work forward especially Becky Desrocher, Dorothy Attakora-Gyan , and Gabrielle Frechette. This campaign is growing because of you.

What’s next?

  • Our big citywide meeting
  • Followed by a citywide action to kick off this campaign loud and clear

Ottawa tenants deserve safe, well-maintained homes and together, we’re building the power to make that happen.
