“Hands Off Our Homes”: Surrey Anti-Demoviction March Takes the Fight to City Hall

Posted May 28, 2024

The sudden issuance of eviction notices to all tenants of the 50+ unit building at the end of April sparked a wave of solidarity, prompting Elizabeth Manor tenants to join ACORN in defense of their affordable homes.

While gathering out front of the building to start the rally, ACORN members addressed the crowd of supporters and media and stressed the need for all Surrey renter’s to act collectively.

City Council hear our voice, no displacement, it’s your choice! Marching down 104th Ave, members repeated protest chants calling on City Hall to meet with them urgently.

North Surrey tenant leader Arun Joy Mulackal delivered a letter on behalf of ACORN and Elizabeth Manor tenants, asking Mayor Locke to urgently meet and discuss their concerns and proposed solutions before the redevelopment application reaches Council next month.

It’s not enough to simply stop evictions at Elizabeth Manor. ACORN is fighting for anti-displacement policies like rental top-ups from developers and the right of first refusal, which would allow neighborhoods to develop and densify without forcing people to leave. These measures are crucial for ensuring that communities remain intact and that residents are not displaced in the name of progress.
