On August 28th Hamilton ACORN put forward our ‘Homes for All’ platform for an affordable Hamilton. Mountain Chair Veronica Gonzalez and Mountain chapter member Hunter Celenza led a march from King St W and Queen Queen St S to City Hall stopping at 3 developments that are approved and under construction, but have no plans for affordable rental units. Members put up banners at each site to draw attention to the lack of affordable homes being built.

At City Hall Veronica Gonzalez shared Hamilton ACORN’s demands for 40% affordable homes in all new developments where inclusionary zoning can be used, 100% affordable housing on public land, and city wide protections from renoviction and demoviction. ACORN members Camella Ross and Gordon Smyth shared personal stories about their experience with displacement and trying to find affordable homes in Hamilton. Members were joined by allies from Hamilton and District Labour Council, Hamilton Community Benefits Network, and Environment Hamilton who spoke about the importance of a LRT that benefits Hamiltonians.
