BC ACORN Blitzes the Phone Lines for Affordable Energy and Cool Housing!

Posted August 21, 2025

BC ACORN members from across the lower mainland gathered over Zoom to fill the voicemails of Premier David Eby and Energy Minister Adrian Dix, as well as everyone’s local MLAs, to demand the province do more to keep energy affordable and invest in our communities to keep us safe and cool.

Since we had the heat dome in 2021 where 619 people died across BC, it’s become clear that air conditioning is now a necessity here. But not only are air conditioners and heat pumps expensive to buy, they’re expensive to run, too.

At the same time, the government is giving huge subsidies to LNG projects up in Northern BC that are fueling the climate crisis and are going to raise the costs of the average person’s hydro bill. That funding should instead go toward protecting people from rising temperatures.

So ACORN BC is demanding the province end subsidies to LNG and use that funding to instead:

  • Expand the free air conditioners program, and cut the red tape, so that more people can get cooling.
  • Create energy credits for low-to-moderate income ratepayers who struggle to pay bills.
  • Prioritize and fund heat pump installations and electrical upgrades in low-to-moderate income rental housing.
  • Change tenant laws to guarantee that all renters can have air conditioning, no matter what their landlord says.
