April Fools on Albertans: ADAP is a Joke

Posted April 1, 2026

On April Fools’ Day, Calgary ACORN members came together to tell the government that “ADAP is a Joke!”

The Alberta Government is playing a bad joke on Albertans with disabilities by stealing $200 per month from them, as well as introducing work requirements to make up the difference.

CBC sent a reporter, who interviewed three of our members, including Jesse, who spoke to the press for the first time and did a fantastic job calling on all Albertans to unite and fight back against ADAP. The reporter also filmed us holding our signs and chanting. Members shared personal stories about their struggles on AISH and how this new program will hurt them even more.

3 new members joined the fight in Calgary at the action!

The event went really well, and the members seemed to have a lot of fun! A member, Myrl, made some props out of paper bags with photos of Jason Nixon, the Minister of Assisted Living and Social Services (i.e., the one in charge of rolling out ADAP), and Premier of Alberta Danielle Smith on them. Members had a lot of fun making fools of the premier and the minister, saying the truth about the government’s true goals to force people with disabilities into poverty. We started in the main square, out front of McDougall Centre, then moved to the sidewalk so cars and people walking could see everyone more easily. Many people honked in support from their vehicles.
