ACORN Statement on Rent Cap Extension in New Brunswick

Posted June 5, 2025

ACORN is pleased to see that, as expected, the rent cap of 3% will be extended for the 2025–2026 fiscal year in New Brunswick. We have been working with Minister Hickey and have remained in communication about the importance of protecting tenants. We are excited to see the Minister following through on the commitments made to ACORN members.

As the Minister stated in the Legislature today, a review of the Residential Tenancies Act is planned for this fall. ACORN sees this review as a critical opportunity—not only to make rent control permanent in New Brunswick, but also to establish a strong rent control system that protects tenants and keeps housing affordable.

Through our Do Rent Control Right platform, ACORN is calling on the province to:

  • Close loopholes that allow landlords to circumvent rent control through tactics like Landlord-Use Evictions and Cash for Keys
  • Prevent landlords from harassing or forcefully removing tenants unlawfully
  • Enforce these points with a proper RTT compliance enforcement unit

Tenants across the province deserve stable, secure, and affordable housing. ACORN will continue organizing to ensure their voices are heard loud and clear!
