ACORN Montreal for a real rent registry

Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante of Projet Montreal finally announced her plan for a rent registry and landlord certification, two goals that ACORN Montreal has been campaigning on for the past three years. This is an encouraging development and we have much to be proud of. However, the battle is far from over.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, we have heard from more and more tenants across the island who live in increasingly difficult conditions. Apartments in a state of disrepair, some with vermin infestations, and even often without heat during the winter. A landlord registry that targets only a third of the apartments will not be enough, especially if its teeth are removed.

ACORN Montreal tenants know that the only way to make themselves heard by politicians is to keep up the fight. In order to guarantee the effectiveness of a landlord certification program in Montreal, we must continue to demand a program that:

  • Reviews and updates the Housing Sanitation and Maintenance By-law.
  • Has real financial consequences for delinquent landlords
  • Expands the landlord certification program so that all tenants are protected, not just for buildings with eight or more households.
  • Accelerates program implementation. 2027 is too late for tenants.

If we really want to make sure things change for the better, it will be together: Add your voice!
