500+ Join Emergency Meeting to Fight Doug Ford’s Attacks on Tenants!
Posted October 29, 2025
More than 500 renters from across Ontario joined ACORN’s emergency meeting on October 28th to respond to Doug Ford’s escalating attacks on tenants — from his government’s new Bill 60: the “Fighting Delays, Building Faster Act”, to his recent attempt to end rent control through fixed-term leases.
After massive public outrage led by ACORN and other tenant groups, Ford’s plan to end rent control is “on pause” — but not gone. Meanwhile, Bill 60 still threatens to fast-track evictions, silence tenants at the Landlord and Tenant Board, and weaken housing protections across the province.
Members heard opening remarks from ACORN Canada President, Alejandra Ruiz-Vargas, and then listened intently to ACORN leaders Sara Laviolette & Tanya Burkart who broke down the proposals and how tenants can fight back to stop them.
Special thanks to Nova Scotia ACORN’s Tim Allenby who joined us to share how fixed-term leases have been a disaster for tenants out east (and why we don’t want them in Ontario!) as well as Douglas Kwan from ACTO who spoke about how Bill 60 further disadvantages tenants at the LTB.
Highlight of the night was when the group took time to flood Doug Ford, Housing Minister Rob Flack and Attorney General Doug Downey’s messages from tenants! Their voicemails filled up quick.
Huge thanks to our facilitators, speakers, and everyone who came out to learn, share, and take action. Together, we’re building the tenant power it takes to win.
The fight isn’t over.

Don’t know what to say? Try this:
“Hello my name is __ and I’m an Ontario resident and supporter of the ACORN Tenant Union. While the announcement to explore removing rent control through fixed term leases has been walked back, I don’t believe that’s enough. ACORN is demanding the Province commit to never introducing fixed term leases, close the current loopholes on rent control, pass vacancy control, withdraw Bill 60 and rebalance the LTB for tenants – not just landlords. To discuss more, call (say your # or ACORN’s 613 746 5999 ext 3)
