Ottawa ACORN’s Resisting Renovictions Housing Forum was a total success!! On November 8th, over 50 ACORN members and tenants from across the city gathered to learn about Ottawa ACORN’s demands for a Renoviction Bylaw and listened to incredible guest speakers.
The problem we are stressing is that long term tenants are being evicted and priced out of the neighbourhood which has real impacts on families plus we are losing affordable housing. We can’t build our way out of the crisis because we’re losing more affordable housing than we can build.
That’s why we need a Renoviction Bylaw in Ottawa. This is not new or radical. Ottawa ACORN’s campaign for a Renoviction Bylaw is based off what was passed in New Westminster, BC.
City Councillor Stephanie Plante has already reached out to Ottawa ACORN asking for a follow up meeting to see how we can work together to push this bylaw forward!!
A HUGE thank you to our guest speakers Councillor Jaimie McEvoy from New Westminster, BC, Hamilton ACORN’s East End Co-Chair Ted Plastaras, and Claire Michela from RavenLaw.
Massive shoutout to ACORN leaders Edward Roue, Lionel Njeukam, and Fatime Ousmane who did an incredible job leading a very powerful night.
Stay tuned for a recording of the event.
