Tenants Against Cockroaches: Why Moncton Needs Landlord Licensing

A dozen Moncton ACORN members gathered in a low-income neighbourhood on a cloudy afternoon to say it loud and clear: cockroaches (and all pests!) are a huge issue which is being ignored by landlords and the city alike.

Despite having a municipal by-law with minimum property standards, and provincial rules too, pest issues are incredibly common, and fly under the radar for years.

Members took to the streets with educational flyers, our Landlord Licensing petition (asking city hall to proactively protect tenants!) and a good old fashioned poem by our poet laureate, Carly DeWitt.

Une douzaine de membres d’ACORN Moncton se sont rassemblés cet après-midi dans un quartier défavorisé pour le dire haut et fort : les cafards (et tous les pestes !) sont un sérieux problème que les propriétaires et la ville ignorent complètement.

Malgré l’existence d’un arrêté municipal définissant des critères minimaux en matière d’entretien des logements et de réglementations provinciales, les problèmes liés aux pestes sont incroyablement nombreux et passent souvent inaperçus pendant des années.

Les membres sont descendus dans la rue avec des feuillets d’information, notre pétition permis pour les propriétaires (demandant à la ville de protéger proactivement les locataires !) et un poème de notre poète attitrée, Carly DeWitt. (Se reporter plus haut, en Anglais)
