ACORN Rallies as ADAP Begins Tomorrow

Posted June 30, 2026

ACORN members and disability advocates gathered at the Calgary South AISH office to say NO to ADAP and that we will not be bullied into silence. We rallied to demand dignity, stability, and disability supports that people can actually live on—not American-style work requirements.

ADAP is a new disability program created by Danielle Smith and the UCP for those currently on AISH that the government has decided are able to work.

ADAP comes into effect tomorrow on July 1, and will cut disability benefits by $200/month, while lowering the income people can earn before clawbacks.

We delivered our demand letter directly to the AISH Regional Director, who met with us and committed to delivering it to Marika Giesen, Assistant Deputy Minister responsible for AISH and the Alberta Disability Assistance Program.

ACORN members receiving AISH spoke about the injustice of the government moving ahead with a program the disability community has repeatedly warned will harm people and their families. The stories were a powerful reminder of why we must keep fighting—for economic security, for dignity, and for disability supports built with Albertans, not imposed on them.

Thank you to everyone who came out, shared your stories, and stood together!

The fight doesn’t end on July 1. We will keep organizing, speaking out, and fighting until every Albertan with a disability has the income, dignity, and supports they deserve.
