ACORN Members Fight Golden Equity’s Above the Guideline Rent Increase (AGI) and WIN!

This year ACORN members living in 25, 35, and 45 Trudelle St in Scarborough were given an AGI with a 5.65% increase!
ACORN members and tenants came together to organize their neighbours, hold meetings, go doorknocking, learn our rights, and to fight the AGI!
ACORN leader living at 35 Trudelle, Jaleesa Sinclair says, “Our strength is in supporting each other. Changes can happen through patience and documentation – as long as we work as a team we will be successful!”
At the Landlord Tenant Board’s case management hearing on Thursday October 23rd, over 50 tenants showed up to successfully negotiate the proposed 5.65% increase down to 0.68%!
Their landlord, Golden Equity, was asking for money for the roof work they had done in 2022. However, Jalessa and others had documentation that in 2017 the roof had major work done that was supposed to last 10 years! Due to this the Landlord Tenant Board disapproved expenses for the roof work, which brought down the rent increase to 0.68%!
