ACORN PROTESTS MASS RENOVICTIONS AS CITY LAUNCHES PUBLIC CONSULTATIONS!

Posted September 4, 2025

OTTAWA, ON— ACORN members marched down Montreal Road then Hochelaga Street to stand with ACORN members at 660 Hochelaga who are facing mass renovictions at the hands of landlord Philip Augustine and property management firm Sleepwell.

With public consultations on a municipal renoviction bylaw now underway, ACORN is demanding real protections—not more displacement. The march sent a clear message: We won’t let landlords force people out just to hike rents.

Shoutout to ACORN members Natasha Girard for leading the march and rallying tenants to action, Patrick LaPlante for speaking to media about ACORN’s provincial demands for rent control, vacancy control, and municipal renoviction bylaws with teeth, and Scott McNaule and Rick Whitford for sharing powerful words about what’s at stake for themselves if they lose their home. Renovictions are nothing more than a money grab—and ACORN won’t stand for it. Housing is a human right. Stop the renovictions on Hochelaga Street and implement a STRONG renoviction bylaw in Ottawa NOW!
