ACORN Hamilton calls on RBC to support low income customers against predatory scams

Posted October 10, 2024

Today ACORN’s downtown chapter held a rally outside the 21 King St W RBC branch in support of a member who was victim of a sophisticated and predatory phone scam in June.

Over two days in June (7th &12th), $617.69 was withdrawn from Jennifer McGrath’s RBC chequing account. The scammers called through a spoofed phone number appearing as RBC.

Despite RBC agreeing a scam took place, they have refused to cover the loss of funds.

While $617.69 might not mean much to a huge financial institution like RBC, it is everything to a low income renter on ODSP.

ACORN members called on the bank to cover the loss of funds and improve their policy when low income customers with disabilities fall victim to predatory scams.

Instead of listening to one of their customers, they locked the door and called the police. We have emailed our demand letter to RBC CEO David McKay.
