Tell the Ontario Housing Minister – Affordable Housing IS Smart!

Update on ACORN Canada’s housing campaign in Ontario

Posted March 19, 2015

Here is what is happening in Ontario with the Housing Minister’s new proposed Smart Growth for our Communities Act (Bill 73): it opens up the Planning Act and takes pieces of Liberal MPP Peter Milczyn’s Bill 39 proposed changes on the OMB – but does NOTHING to solve the housing crisis in Ontario.

The Liberal government for a decade has been creating and perpetuating a housing crisis in Ontario, and although Liberal Housing Minister Ted McMeekin is proposing changes to the Planning Act, they will not include giving Inclusionary Zoning powers to Ontario municipalities.

The Liberal government is claiming they want real solutions for housing – including saying Inclusionary Zoning is on the ‘to-do list.’ But then when they have an opportunity to do something, they deliberately exclude this important fix in the Planning Act that would enable municipalities to create more affordable housing.

The proposed Smart Growth for our Communities Act needs to be smart! Enabling Ontario municipalities to create more housing is smart.
