Rally in Mississauga to stop the displacement of seniors

Peel ACORN joined the families of seniors for a rally held yesterday. Chartwell, who owns the retirement homes at 6515 Glen Erin Drive in Mississauga, recently sold the buildings to another corporate landlord, Minto. Chartwell gave residents N13 eviction notices claiming to do massive renovations that need vacant possession!

Chartwell is Canada’s biggest owner and operator of retirement and long term care homes. They are doing just the bare minimum to support residents, many of whom are in their 90s. They are in fact harassing residents by knocking on their doors, holding townhalls etc. to ensure that residents move out. There are more than 200 seniors in these homes who are being forced to move out.

More than 70 people were out yesterday to show their support for the residents. ACORN members were joined by the NDP MPP Faisal Hassan, families of senior residents, many members in the neighbourhood as well as workers’ union.

Michele Sarantos, a new ACORN leader, spoke to the media and did a fantastic job.

Last week, ACORN leader Marcia Bryan spoke at the city council meeting along with families of residents to ask the city of Mississauga to reverse the decision taken by the Committee of Adjustment which approved the conversion of retirement home to an apartment building.
