Trudelle Street ACORN Tenant Union Cooks Up Souvlaki & Solidarity!

Posted July 25, 2026

On July 25, ACORN members at 25, 35, and 45 Trudelle Street in Scarborough celebrated their tenant organizing efforts, their victories so far, and the community they’ve built and strengthened together.

ACORN block captain Jaleesa, with help from neighbours, coordinated a community barbeque in their large front yard! With hotdogs, hamburgers, and chicken souvlaki available for all neighbours, it was a feast for the whole family—with a few exciting guests! Mayor Olivia Chow stepped in to help cook up a storm, before speaking with tenants about Golden Equity Properties’ continued neglect of the properties and those who call Trudelle Street home.

The community barbeque wasn’t all celebration, however: ACORN members mean business.

The event was perfectly located to show off the nearby parking lot — a large, pock-marked asphalt slab with parking lines but no assigned spots — that tenants pay as much as $200/month for, despite no guarantees that ‘their’ spot will be available when they need it.

Tenants then brought Mayor Chow for a tour through some of the problem areas of the buildings, including ancient unreliable elevators, damaged window panes, front doors off their hinges, mold, and more.

We capped off the event with a huge demand letter drop… literally! A large, 3’ x 5’ Bristol board with the tenant union’s demands was taped to the management office door. Previous letter drops to Golden Equity’s head office have been mailed back with a return-to-sender label. Let’s see if they try to send this one back!
