Last week, on Thursday February 17th, City Council voted on their final budget for 2022. ACORN members were fighting for money to protect tenants, build affordable housing, stop evictions, freeze childcare fees and provide affordable internet access. We had hundreds of members send letters, emails and calls to the Mayor and their city councillor. As a result, we were able to win $500,000 in new funding to hire 7 bylaw officers who can be used to go out and crack down on bad landlords who violate property standards! We also won a motion by Mike Layton that all but ONE councillor supported for a report on ways to increase staffing on RentSafe and expand the program.
This wasn’t everything that we wanted, but it shows that organizing works! We have two big elections coming up and we need to make sure the demands of low and moderate income communities are front and center. If you haven’t gotten more involved in the past, now is the time!
