Tenants at 365 Bay Mills Boulevard demand security cameras in light of shooting

Toronto, Ontario – On Thursday, April 10th, ACORN members and tenants of 365 Bay Mills Boulevard delivered a petition to the Toronto Community Housing Corporation’s Scarborough regional office at 2739 Victoria Park Avenue, demanding security cameras and repairs for their building.
Their demands come in the light of a recent shooting incident at their building. The residents, fearful for the safety of their family and kids, gathered signatures from many of their neighbours asking Toronto Community Housing to install security cameras as a deterrent to more criminal activity.
Upon delivery of the petition, the tenants were met by TCHC staff, who told them that installing cameras would take anywhere from a few months to a year due to funding restrictions.
“We’re out here dying and they say they don’t have money,” said Ali Washah, ACORN member and resident of 365 Bay Mills Boulevard.
This predicament is not isolated to the tenants of Bay Mills Boulevard — it is the reality for social housing tenants across the city. While the tenants of Bay Mills await further response from TCHC, ACORN will keep pressuring the City of Toronto to ensure that all residents, regardless of whether they live in social housing or not, live in dignified and safe conditions.
