Tell the UCP to Support Bill 205 for a Temporary Rent Cap!
Posted December 5, 2023
On December 5th, 2023 ACORN joined NDP housing critic Janis Irwin at a press conference in Calgary where MLA Irwin announced her private members bill for a temporary rent cap. The proposed rent cap would last for four years, with the first two years rents capped at 2% and the next two years capped at inflation and no higher than 5%.
Currently Alberta tenants lack many of the basic protections that other provinces have. Landlords in Alberta can increase the rent every year, and unlike most other provinces there is no limit to the amount rent can go up by.
With rents all over Alberta skyrocketing, tenants are seeing their rents rise by 30%, 50% and in some cases even more. Tenants in Alberta can not afford these increases and it’s time for the government to put a stop to these astronomical rent hikes.
A temporary rent cap is a common-sense first step to curb these increases and give Albertans the peace of mind of knowing they’ll be able to stay in their homes.
